LoDo, short for Lower Downtown, is the oldest part of Denver's core. The city started here in 1858 near where Cherry Creek meets the South Platte River. By the early 1900s the blocks were full of brick warehouses serving the rail yards, and today most of those buildings hold lofts, restaurants and offices.
The classic LoDo home is a loft in a converted warehouse with exposed brick, timber beams and tall windows. Newer mid-rise condo buildings fill in the blocks closer to Union Station. LoDo has been a Denver historic district since 1988, so building exteriors are protected and the streets keep their low brick skyline.
Union Station, rebuilt in 1914 and restored in 2014, has a hotel, restaurants and a big waiting room that works as a public living room. Coors Field sits on LoDo's northeast edge, with McGregor Square across the street. Larimer Square, Denver's first historic district, is a block of restaurants and shops under strings of lights. Commons Park and the Millennium Bridge connect LoDo to the South Platte River trails.
Union Station is the center of the RTD rail system, so light rail, commuter rail and regional buses all leave from LoDo. The A Line reaches Denver International Airport in about 37 minutes. Expect crowds and closed streets on Rockies game days.
