Capitol Hill, or Cap Hill, starts at the gold dome of the Colorado State Capitol and runs east toward Cheesman Park. It is one of Denver's oldest and densest neighborhoods. Locals walk to dinner, to shows on Colfax and to work downtown, and plenty of them have given up the car.
Silver-boom money built big stone and brick mansions here in the 1880s and 1890s, including the stretch of Pennsylvania Street once called Millionaires' Row. Many of those houses are now split into condos or offices. Most of the housing today is apartments and condos, from 1920s brick walk-ups to mid-century high-rises with views of the mountains. Single-family homes exist but come up for sale less often. Plenty of older buildings have no garage, so ask about parking early.
The Capitol's west steps have markers showing where the elevation reaches one mile above sea level. A few blocks away, the Molly Brown House Museum tells the story of the Titanic survivor who lived there. Colfax Avenue runs along the north edge with the Fillmore Auditorium, the Ogden Theatre and decades of bars and diners. Cheesman Park and the Denver Botanic Gardens are a short walk east.
Colfax has some of the most frequent bus service in the city, and downtown is about a 15 to 20 minute walk. Bike lanes on Broadway and Lincoln run into the core.

The name refers to Pennsylvania Street and the blocks around it, where wealthy Denver families built mansions during the silver boom of the late 1800s.
