Golden

Foothills town west of Denver with a historic downtown on Clear Creek, Colorado School of Mines and trailheads close by.

Golden sits at the mouth of Clear Creek Canyon, about 15 miles west of downtown Denver, with North and South Table Mountain on one side and the foothills on the other. It's the Jefferson County seat, and from 1862 to 1867 it was the capital of Colorado Territory. It still has a walkable downtown, with a creek running right past it.

Downtown Golden and Clear Creek

Washington Avenue is the main street. Its arch, which reads "Howdy Folks! Welcome to Golden, Where the West Lives," has spanned the street since 1949. The blocks around it hold restaurants, breweries, coffee shops and outdoor gear stores in brick buildings from the late 1800s. Clear Creek runs along the south edge of downtown, and the Clear Creek Trail follows it past a whitewater park where people kayak and float the creek in summer.

Colorado School of Mines and Coors

Colorado School of Mines, founded in 1874, sits just above downtown, and the white M on Mount Zion belongs to the school. Coors has brewed beer in Golden since 1873. Visit Golden lists its brewery here as the largest single-site brewing facility in the world, and tours and tastings run several days a week.

Homes in Golden

The oldest houses are Victorians and brick cottages close to downtown, including the 12th Street Historic Residential District. Much of the rest of the city is mid-century ranches and homes built from the 1970s on, many with views of the Table Mountains or the foothills. New construction has been limited. Voters capped residential growth at 1% a year in 1995, and the cap held until a 2023 state law repealed it, so Golden's housing grew slowly for almost three decades.

Many homes with Golden mailing addresses sit outside city limits, up Lookout Mountain or Golden Gate Canyon. Those properties can come with wells, septic systems, wildfire mitigation needs and steep roads in winter, so ask about each one before you write an offer.

Parks and the outdoors

North Table Mountain Park sits right above town, and Jefferson County's White Ranch Park and Apex Park are a short drive away. Lookout Mountain has the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave and a nature center. Golden Gate Canyon State Park is about 30 minutes up the canyon road, and I-70 is minutes south for trips into the mountains.

Schools and getting around

Golden is in Jeffco Public Schools, and Golden High School serves much of the city. The W Line light rail ends at the Jefferson County Government Center station in Golden and runs east to Union Station. By car, downtown Denver is about 25 minutes away on US 6 without traffic.

Common questions about Golden

How far is Golden from downtown Denver?

About 15 miles west, usually 25 to 35 minutes by car. The W Line light rail also connects Golden to Union Station.

Does Golden still have a growth cap?

No. Voters approved a 1% yearly limit on new homes in 1995. A 2023 state law, House Bill 23-1255, repealed it along with similar caps in Lakewood and Boulder.

What should I know before buying a foothills home near Golden?

Homes outside city limits often rely on wells and septic systems, sit in wildfire areas and have steep roads that matter in winter. Ask about water, septic inspections, mitigation and insurance early.
