Douglas County town halfway between Denver and Colorado Springs, named for the butte above its historic downtown.
Castle Rock is the Douglas County seat, about 30 miles south of downtown Denver on I-25 and about 35 miles north of Colorado Springs. The town is named for the castle-shaped butte that rises above downtown. It started out as a ranching and rhyolite-quarrying town, and most of its growth has come since the 1990s.
Rock Park has a short, steep trail to the top of the butte, with views south to Pikes Peak. The star on the Rock dates to 1936. The town lights it at a Starlighting celebration the Saturday before Thanksgiving, and it stays on every night until the National Western Stock Show wraps up in January. Downtown, along Wilcox and Perry Streets, has local restaurants and breweries in a mix of historic and newer buildings, and Festival Park holds concerts and events in summer. For bigger shopping trips, the Outlets at Castle Rock sit just off I-25, and the Promenade near Founders Parkway has larger stores and restaurants.
Most homes are single-family houses in master-planned neighborhoods built from the 1990s on. The Meadows, west of I-25, is the biggest and is planned for more than 10,000 homes at buildout, with its own schools and trail network. Crystal Valley Ranch, in the southeast, has about 600 acres of open space and a recreation center. Red Hawk and Plum Creek are built around golf courses, and Castlewood Ranch has a more rural feel out toward Castlewood Canyon State Park. Condos and apartments near downtown give buyers a walkable option.
The south end of town is where the newest growth is. Dawson Trails is planned for about 5,850 homes along I-25, next to the new Crystal Valley interchange. The Crystal Valley Parkway bridge over I-25 opened in November 2025, and the town expects the full interchange to be done in 2027.
Philip S. Miller Park is the town's 300-acre regional park. Its Challenge Hill is a 200-step outdoor staircase that climbs 178 feet, and the park also has a 2.5-acre adventure playground, zip lines, about 8 miles of dirt trails and the indoor Miller Activity Complex. Castlewood Canyon State Park is a short drive east, and Daniels Park, with its bison herd, is to the north.
Castle Rock is in the Douglas County School District, which includes Castle View High School and Douglas County High School along with several charter schools. There's no light rail here, so most people drive I-25. The Denver Tech Center is about 25 minutes north and downtown Denver about 40 minutes without traffic.
About 30 miles south of downtown on I-25, usually 35 to 45 minutes by car. The Denver Tech Center is closer, about 25 minutes.
No. Castle Rock has no light rail service, and most commuters drive I-25 north.
